5x5 Chair: A Unique Design Challenge

Unleashing the Potential of Xilith

The 5x5 chair is a remarkable design project that pushes the boundaries of material innovation and craftsmanship. Designed by Barbara Princic, this chair showcases the unique properties of xilith, a raw material that is both hard and fragile. Through creative problem-solving and meticulous craftsmanship, Princic has transformed this challenging material into a stunning piece of furniture.

The inspiration for the 5x5 chair came from the material itself. Xilith, found 300 meters beneath the earth's surface, is combined with coal to create a unique raw material. However, the majority of this material is discarded, leading to environmental waste. Princic saw an opportunity to repurpose this material and create something provocative and challenging.

The main challenge in designing the 5x5 chair was shaping the xilith tiles. Due to its hardness and fragility, xilith is notoriously difficult to work with. However, Princic embraced this limitation as a design challenge. The seat and back of the chair are made entirely of xilith tiles, each with its own unique pattern and color. This means that no two chairs are alike, giving each piece a distinct character.

To create the structure of the chair, Princic used metal tub legs and a laser-cut metal sheet for the seat and back support. The metal surfaces are treated with nickel to enhance their durability and visual appeal. The xilith tiles are carefully cut and treated with linseed oil before being glued onto the metal sheet surface. The result is a chair that seamlessly combines the elegance of metal with the natural beauty of xilith.

Not only is the 5x5 chair visually striking, but it also offers exceptional comfort and ergonomic support. The thoughtful design of the seat and back ensures a comfortable sitting experience, making this chair as functional as it is beautiful.

The 5x5 chair made its debut in 2008 and has since been exhibited at various design exhibitions around the world. Its unique design and innovative use of materials have garnered attention and accolades. In 2014, the chair was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.

Barbara Princic's 5x5 chair is a testament to the power of creativity and resourcefulness. By embracing the limitations of a challenging material, Princic has created a truly unique and captivating piece of furniture. This chair not only showcases the beauty of xilith but also highlights the importance of sustainable design practices.
